Well, I've sniffled and dribbled my way round the eye exam, and am now half a grand lighter of wallet.
" the good news mr farmer is that your shonky left eye is not caused by diabetes, as you'd have a matching shonky right eye. We are fairly sure though that you are about to develop cataracts"
All in all I feel this is a bit harsh, considering the worst I could have done to them is pass on a bit of a cold.
Anyone care to join me in a strong drink?

Specs are an expensive necessity.
Just bought a loaf tin as I'm making meatloaf tonight. Using a combo of recipes so it will probably go pearshaped. Though hopefully not literally.
Humming and hawing about whether to use a glaze or not.

Who or what is a "Wolf Hongo"?
Hello all.
Grey and damp down this way, so all we've done today is driven a total of twenty miles round trip to an Asian supermarket.
Lunch: dim sum.

A mix of beef with streaky bacon, onion, carrot, mushroom. The stuff apart from the beef I've been cooking off in a little butter and some red wine. Currently reducing. Add to beef, panko crumbs and an egg. Worcestershire sauce and ketchup glaze?
Oh. And some garlic and parsley in among it

Felice there ruining my child's dinner by not answering my cookery questions.
Breathtaking arrogance.
We're having boiled spuds as tomorrow night we're having chicken pie that has mash as a topping.
Just ordered a new Winter parka and some boots.

Tonight I am cooking two dishes; spag bol for my daughters and chilli con carne for Mrs D and me. And I have taken a tip from Tom Kerridge (he of the £32.50 Fish and chip supper) and pre-browned the mince in the oven for an hour until it resembles coffee granules before adding it to the two dishes. I'm interested to see if it makes a difference.

Just ordered a new Winter parka and some boots. If you've boiled the spuds you might as well mash them and yes to your glaze question though maybe add a bit of sweetness, brown sugar?

Tom makes it sound like a game changer. Then again the guy tries to justify his fish n chips prices by claiming his chips are individually hand-cut from “incredibly expensive” potatoes
Kobe or Wagyu spuds perhaps?

Buying your potatoes from Waitrose still doesn't justify £32.50 fish & chips.

Strong drink? Yes, please.
I've never paid quite that much for an eye examination and glasses, but it's been close.
Note that the High Street optometrist doesn't always get their ophthamological diagnosis right. A few years ago the Preferred Mammal was diagnosed by one of them with macular degeneration and referred to a specialist. Said specialist took one look, phoned up her colleague and told him: "You should be excited! I have a detached retina for you!"
(He was excited and got to operate on Preferred Mammal twice*, but the misdiagnosis meant that valuable time was lost.)
*This is done under local anaesthetic, so Preferred Mammal wasn't too keen to hear the surgeon going "Oops" at one point. Apparently this was the moment his eye sort of came apart and needed to be reassembled. Anyway, they did a good job.

Wow Gong hopefully they are wrong about the cataracts are at least are catching it early.
I had a quick dabble on Borderlands 3, game looks great and they certainly make an effort with the humour.

Felice I had added some brown sugar thanks. I'd googled meatloaf glaze and most suggested it. The meatloaf was really tasty. There should have been more of it for leftovers...
Someone whilst draining fat off dropped half in the sink. Clown.

I had a similar experience at the dentist once. The lady was pulling out a rotten tooth (for a bridge) and I heard an 'Oh' followed by part of the surrounding upper jaw bits landing on my chest with blood etc.. After some detailed negotiations, a week later, I murdered her.* *Actually, I got a lot of free dental work. Private work. Then I murdered her. Priorities etc..

The shepherds pie was lamb, although I must confess that due to lack of stock, the gravy was beef based. Enough leftovers for a hot lunch tomorrow.
Eyeball chat! Hopefully it'll be a while before any surgery is needed. I'd figured something was up as I'd lost focus in one eye, but if I used binoculars without specs I could still get a perfect focus using the separate eyepiece focus ring so the eye itself was ok, but had become mismatched to the specs prescription. With luck it will be a while before it changes much again.... currently my left eye is -9.8. On the plus side, it's now so bad I get the eye test for free, as well as about £55 off the cost courtesy of the NHS.
I'm not normally squeamish, but the thought of eyeball surgery under local anaesthetic puts the willies right up me. Too much Clockwork Orange.
