I might point out that prisoners in the USA and the UK are used in similar ways. The minimum wage for UK prisoners in work is £4. Per week. Not per hour.

Yes, but UK prisoners can't be forced to work, and I've never heard reports of them working 12 hour days. That's not a slight difference in the detail, it's a category difference between slavery and not-slavery.

Although, you're also right in that the wage for prisoners is ridiculous, and our own prison system is fucked. But it's still fucked in a less bad way than China's.
