Morning all.
12 off over with, back to work. Boo etc. My next 12 off will be spent doing 40 hours of driving lessons and a test so I can finally act like an adult and hasten the death of Greta's future*.
How've you all been in my absence? Good I hope**.
Ganes! Lots. WoW, standard. Latest Harvest Moon, ok but no Stardew. Temtem, Pokemon+ with less content (early access atm, forgivable) and a lot more grinding required (6 hours grinding levels just to still get two shot by the next bosses monsters? Fuck off. Not forgivable). Pokemon Home, trying to fill the 'dex (realised I still haven't finished Sun/ Moon so fished out the old 3DS).
Filums! Went to see Parasite. Very good. 4 *s.
TV! A lot of Taskmaster, as the wife seems to enjoy watching every episode back to back, over and over. It is very funny though. Also finally managed to finish s1 of Killing Eve.
* Tbh, I would prefer an electric car when/ if I pass but they're stupidly expensive and just as polluting, unless you can guarantee your electricity is 'green'. ** Except for you. Obviously.

Range anxiety is no longer really a problem - most EVs these days will to 200 miles between charges. I was considering an eGolf, but I think there are a lot of new models coming into the market this year and next... which should also help drive down the price of the previous generations.

I'm having a coffee with sugar in it. *blows raspberry at Crank* White sugar probably you daft racist. At least it wasn't syrup. Hello! Uncharted 2. Ice monsters you say. Mrs Crank never saw any ice monsters when trekking in Nepal. Probably too busy with the dysentary. More Once upon a time in Hollywood on the commute. So the immigration plan is to get the poor to do the jobs immigrants are doing but stuff will be so expensive they'll still be poor? What happens when there are no poor folk left as Cummings has neutered them all and the rest have died in fields picking fruit no-one can afford to buy?

Badly. It made me feel ill, an uneasy feeling of numbness in my throat and chest. I realise this is probably a 'good thing' and will pass, but atm I'm alternating between the bad stuff and vape. Thank you for your enquiry. Pass the sugar please.

In America, first you get the sugar. Then you get the women. Then you get the power.

Obviously. It depends what you mean by "just as polluting".
The UK Electricity grid averages (at the moment, it tends to fall each quarter) 200g of CO2 / kWh. A typical small EV will use 20 kWh per 100km, equating to 40g CO2 / km.
A typical small petrol car, driven carefully, will produce in the region of 130g CO2 / km. A larger petrol car or 4x4 would be considerably higher.
In terms of cost, at 14p / kWh approximate domestic cost, that equates to £2.80 / 100km. A petrol car at 45mpg and £1.25 per litre of petrol will cost about £12.60 / 100km. If annual distance is 20,000km (12,427 miles, so not a high annual mileage) then the saving each year is about £2,000, plus savings on road tax.
The CO2 emissions of an ev might be lower if you have a green energy supplier. I say "might" because you're still using the same electricity through the same grid, generated in the same way. You are ensuring that you pay for at least as much renewable to be added to the grid as you use, encouraging the system to switch more quickly to renewable sources. I would recommend Tonik; their prices are reasonable and the energy mix they use is genuinely renewable (all solar and wind).
There are conflicting accounts of the environmental and human impact of the production of cars, but it's probably fair to say there isn't a whole lot between petrol or diesel and an EV. Particulate and NOx emissions are a major source of localised pollution from driving fossil fuel cars, especially diesels, which are avoided or much reduced by EVs. This is particularly important in cities, where particulate pollution is a major, but often under-recognised, health disaster.
It's clear that whilst EVs aren't perfect, combined with the decarbonisation of the electricity grid, they do offer a route to vast reductions in carbon emissions and other air pollutants, whilst maintaining the use of personal vehicles.
It's not that easy to quickly find g CO2 per kWh for the electricity supply of other countries, but 448g / kWh is one figure given for the USA, which obviously would more than double the CO2 pollution from an EV, compared to running it in the UK.
tl:dr, your assertion that EVs are just as polluting unless you can guarantee a renewable electricity supply is wrong.

Thank you for your enquiry. Pass the sugar please. Yeah, I tried vaping for a short while. It made me feel worse than smoking. It felt like I was waking up each morning with a lot of liquid in my lungs, really heavy and unpleasant. It did not fell like the less harmful alternative. I went back to nicotine gum, patches, sprays, lozenges etc.
Edit: plus, y'know, smoking is actually cool. Vaping is not.

My next car will probably be a diesel. In order to be more time efficient, I'll leave the engine permanently running.

95% of the toxins in cigarettes are not present in UK approved e-cigarettes. That does not make them 95% safer. However almost all of the deaths directly associated with e-cigarettes have been after using products that could not be legally sold in the UK.
Would I recommend someone used e-cigs? No. Would I recommend someone used e-cigs in preference to real cigarettes? Yes
The long term consequences of them aren't known and it is very likely that they are worse for you than not using them, but it is also very likely that they are not as bad as cigarettes. It remains a possibility that they are a particularly bad way to take cannabis. Though from what I have read the people that got very ill and or died were vaping quantities that would have been very difficult/impossible to smoke and it is likely anyone trying to take that much cannabis in any way would have suffered significant adverse health consequences.
Once I have caffeined up and calmed down I will preach more on the stupidity of nicotine addiction.
