But if I want to use it to run displaying a benchmark nonstop for a year without it breaking I should be able to, otherwise it isn’t fit for purpose. The fact that they will replace it under warranty is testiment to that. The cards they sell as ‘data center’ cards aren’t significantly different - it’s all the same chips and those are supposed to run at 100% all the time. It’s also not like a washing machine because there are no moving parts. It doesn’t make sense for it to break because it was used too much. If it can they need to put stricter limits on the amount of processing power it can use. It's purpose is to compute the graphical equations when gaming. So, running a benchmark for a year non- stop isn't it's purpose. They likely wouldn't replace the card if you sent it back and told them how you'd used it. Data centre cards aren't used for graphics, right? So less processing power being used, meaning less electricity going through the chips, meaning less strain, meaning longer life. There are moving parts on most cards, the fans. But, aside from them, it's still the voltage going through the card which leads to wear. The analogy still works. The bottom line, in my view, is that the cards aren't being used for their intended purpose, therefore you can't complain when they break. As I've already stated, my cards haven't had a thing go wrong (not even coil whine!) in the ~5 years I've had them, and I game a lot.

They threw us out of the other place for fish puns and bad chat so now everyone talks about games and things that matter? Madness. Gnocchi chat, anyone make their own pasta at home? See cookshops with the rolling gadgets in them but never really thought about DIY pasta as a thing.

Has anyone here actually made decent money mining crypto currency? I mined using 'Asics' a few years ago, up to around $200 worth at current prices, but lost them all when the exchange I used went 'bust'*. So, in short, no. *The owner stole everyone's coins and fucked off.

Data centre work is more intensive than the graphics work by some margin. They can and do explode, which they shouldn't. I don't think voltage leads to wear, otherwise the lights in your house would keep breaking.

Granted it's not an every day occurrence, but it does happen every few years. Also, why do you think energy efficient light bulbs last longer? What you're asking for is a perfect, never gonna break, item. They just don't exist in electronics. All components have a life span. I agree that a graphics card should last a long while, especially given their pricing, but only if they are used properly, as the manufacturer expects.

What would be the best way to get a pc which can play modernish games? The graun had an article on buying second hand company PC's or is it worth going back to the article from keef and Simon from Norwich?

Games: only a bit of Mariolin+Rabbidfishes. Realised that one of the "medium difficulty" challenges is impossible unless I climb that skill tree a bit higher.
Now that Babyfark has finished Mindhunter and is now firmly committed to The Hunt for the Unabomber I would like to have a little rant about the former. I cannot recall a TV series that left so many ends untied and had such holes in its character development, and that includes Japanese anime that had been completely butchered for a western audience. How can you have a storyline like the Demon Ticklemonster Headmaster and just let it fizzle out? And to tease the audience with the ADT serviceman in Kansas without any payoff? It is mostly unclear what conclusions exactly are drawn from the interviews. And, and, and. I told you that I watched Hunt for the Unabomber because of a family connection, but it has much better storytelling.
Rant over.
Btw, I have never put any Bitcoins into my washing machine. I always check the pockets.

If you just want to play at 1080p then you can likely get one for a decent price. Their are plenty of custom builders ones out there. CyberPower are the main ones that spring to mind and have a decent rep.

My new theory is that Holden (I am remembering his name right, right?) is the ADT guy, and we're just watching the abyss stare further and further into him. Bit of a shoddy ending to an otherwise good show.

I did like the first few episodes of Mindhunter, as someone who has an interest in serial killers they nailed Ed Kemper perfectly. I've listened to audio of him, the fact that he narrated children's novels whilst incarcerated never fails to amuse.

In the final episode who is it that Holden notices leaving the supermarket as he left? Was it the Demon Ticklemonster Headmaster? It was. So he's now an alcoholic. So what? It's completely unclear what, if any, effect the confrontation by the DTMH's wife - who played no role before - has on Holden's relationship with Debbie. Did the school board make the right call? We don't know. And the cat... I was pretty sure that the cat would get murdered by a budding serial killer who the team, having gained knowledge from the interviews, would go after. But no. The cat is maybe on holiday. Or something. And was only there to provide a reason for Wendy staying (after she left her partner at the drop of a hat)? Infuriating. Apropos cat, I think that the missing pet poster linked to in the Liartown article is great.

I thought that the performances of all the actors who played the interviewees were great, but the one who played Kemper was really outstanding.

Bill Tench was the man and the soundtrack was fantastic, but some of it was poo.

Afternoon all,
Some rune factory 4 and FF9 over the last week and a stack of studying. I remember getting much more gaming done last time I was a student.
Bitcoin - was in touch with a friend of mine over Christmas who actually made some money from bitcoin. He spent some of the proceeds building a pc with 6 gtx170 graphics cards which is running 24/7 in his garage mining other currencies. If that can turn a profit I can see why graphics cards are hard to get at a decent price.

I watched Hunt for the Unabomber because of a family connection, Family connection the Unabomber? Pray tell... Mr Enemy's father was on the panel that awarded Ted Kaczynski his PhD in Mathematics. He said that Kaczynski had almost completed his thesis when he got wind of someone working on a slightly similar topic, with only a minute overlap. Sure enough, Ted binned the thesis and started from scratch on a topic he perceived as less crowded. After his father's death there was discussion within the family what to do with the paperwork for all the PhDs he had ever examined (he never threw stuff like that away), which included the Unabomber's. It's still in the family's possession, but I'm not aware of anyone having shown any interest in it.
