It's still OK to look down on people who watch the X-Factor though, isn't it? I will pretend to never having seen the X-Factor and be insufferably smug about it.

The comment was more aimed at people who are all: "I've never seen any of these *films/band/artist/insert popular cultural item here*" *smug face emoji* like missing something that is popular makes them better than the people who have seen it and enjoyed it. Watching something and not liking it is fine. To have never seen a thing but look down on those who enjoyed it is just odd. When I was still posting at the other place (remember those times? Ahhh...) I made a comment btl of the latest COD review regarding the loot box racket. I wanted to indicate that I was speaking as someone who wasn't interested in the game as such but in the wider implications for the games industry, so I added that I had never knowingly played an Activision game. That was true - I don't have any interest in their games but might have played something made by them a long time ago, although I don't think so. Someone then responded who assumed that by saying that I was signalling how smug I was about it and that I was trying to be cool and edgy. The moral? People are idiots.

Well done for putting a serious comment in the middle of the puns/jokes/dross

I've never seen Radiohead perform Fake Plastic Trees live and I am incredibly smug about it. I saw Radiohead as a support band and thought "Who are these jokers?" - 6 months later biggest band in the world. I saw Pulp as a support band and thought "Who are these jokers?" - 6 months later biggest band in the world. There are a couple of others. Basically if you want your band to be big get me to see you as a support and not like them.

Not exactly the biggest band in the world, but they're pretty big now. Female Smell were there as well, things haven't gone so well for them.
