I would like to send Paul McCartney down into a fruit cellar. Then I would like to heave a sofa over the trapdoor.

Enoch Powell then Marie stopes seem some interesting choices, thought Jimmy Savill might have been in good company there. So they got off breaking the statue of the slaver. This was a fuck-witted jury. And judge. It is NOT a victory for the "People of England, the World" as one of those who, with their fellow mob members decided to pull this statue down. The defendants are on a par with those clowns from Extinction Rebellion. In effect, the verdict of the court is that the mob can commit a crime without penalty if that crime is sanctioned by a jury. This, not by the law of the land as passed by OUR representatives, but by 12 idiots and a weak-willed judge. Our representatives may be a bunch of self-serving and occasionally bent politicians, but we as a nation elected them. I didn't vote for these four protestors. Once they remember that Drake was a slaver... Drake's statue in Plymouth

Francis Drake just did some light slaving, with his cousin. He stopped when he realised he could make more from high seas plunder.
There are some pretty strong arguments for him being a bad man.
Apparently his main contribution to the Battle of Gravelines was the ramming of the Spanish flagship, followed by the drawn out process of taking everything on it.

It's always been the case that a jury can refuse to convict if they think the prosecution wrong.
The difference between Colston and Drake or Nelson (who was heavily invested in the slave trade and used the Navy to ensure the safety of the West Indies for slave owners) is that the only thing of note Colston did was trade slaves.
The Colston statue and Colston Hall were an embarrassing relic when i was in Bristol 25 years ago. There were moves to rename the hall back then.
The Merchant Venturers society* worked tirelessly to prevent any change though.
* equivalent to the worshipful companies in London. A very cosy protector of a certain sort of privilege. Not necessarily bad people, they do charitable work, but they also represent a very well off group of people.

Finally got round to the second episode of the latest Gomorra series. You might say the suprise at the end of ep1 was lazy*.. but that was some good TV. Four stars. *Actually lazy, I'm not saying lazybones turned up in the ghettos of Naples as an enforcer for the Cosa Nostra. But tbh I'd pay to see that and not just steal it from Sky.

If they try and touch that statue of Drake in Plymouth, I'm pretty sure they will get their heads kicked in.
